You're looking at it in light of 'your' problems instead of the US's


'I don't need an EV right now, therefore I'm not one of those kooks.' Fortunately there are those looking at the big picture, who see EVs as a viable long term solution.

I'm not sure where you're getting the kook POV on this but I don't see anyone saying this is going to happen faster than 10 years. In fact, I see things happening over the next 3 or so decades.

Also, don't assume EV proponents don't understand the grid issue - they just understand the reality of it.
In your 10 year horizon the grid issue is largely a non-issue because that 75 percent of driving which is short range is recharged off-peak. EV owners will have 240 V chargers in their garage so they can top off the battery overnight. This is also when fleets will recharge. This is the time when the grid is least taxed.

If we ever get to the point where we all have 400 mile range batteries and 200 KVA 15 minute recharge stations, the grid becomes an issue. Hence the ramp-up process.
